Encrypting a few things to store on your computer:
If you are looking for a free program that will encrypt a few things that you just don't want sitting on your computer unencrypted, we suggest looking at 7-zip. It will zip up a folder for you and you can encrypt using AES-256 encryption with a password.
If you want to encrypt individual documents:
We suggest using the Libre Office suite of programs. They are an alternative to Microsoft Office. You can password protect your individual documents and spreadsheets easily or use your PGP key for it.
If you are interested in encrypting your emails as well, you can use a browser add on called Mailvelope and use that with our webmail interface, or there are options to use a program such Thunderbird (with the additional plugin called Enigma) or Canary Mail which is a full fledged private email client with the encryption ability built in.
Nothing is easy and super user friendly when it comes to security. Easy passwords are also easy for someone else to guess. Plain documents with important information are also easy for someone else to find. 2 factor authentication is never convenient. It's really up to you as to how much trouble you are willing to go through for your security and peace of mind when it comes to your files and messages.
